Has there been a medical study carried out showing milk thistle/Oregon grape improves acne plagued skin? I have terrible acne problem. My dermatologist prescribed tetracycline capsules with Differin and Azelaic acid tropical cream which I have been taking for 9 months and it has not helped.

I have not seen a study with these two herbs together, but have seen clinical results with our formula for achne and severe cases of eczema.  However, Oregon Grape Root should also benifit the skin according to the papers we've come accross: Oregon Grape Root.  Some times the best clinical studies are the ones we conduct on ourselves.   If you are going to take the combination of Milk Thistle and Oregon Grape, simply keep track for yourself.  They are not going to make your skin worse (and if so, only for a few days at the beginning). Keep us updated as to the results!  -Mark

hi there.

I was interested in your discussion so i thought i might share my experience with you people.
I believe (first-hand experience) that taking supplements of Milk Thistle and Echinacea Root can dramatically improve your face much better than anything the doctor or dermotologist prescibes.
The good thing about Milk Thistle is that you can take it for as long as you want! Echinacea Root can usually only be taken for 2 possibly 3 months at a time. but believe me people milk thistle is a god send for us acne sufferers!

Re: your comment about echinacea being only useable for 2-3 months at a time. While individuals may vary, we have been studying herbs with a naturopathic physician trained at the Naturopathic College of Natural Medicine. She tells us that the idea of limitations on echinacea use is a big myth perpetuated by a big American magazine who misread a research paper on echinacea. The research was in German, and it had graphs which were misinterpreted. The media whizzes who tried to translate the paper got it wrong. It was published with national coverage, and incorrect information! While the magazine printed a correction in the following edition, apparently millions of people took in this information and the myth still lives many years later.

In actuality (this is backed up by valid research which can be looked up by anyone interested in verifying my note), echinacea is not limited in use at all (of course correct dosage and case by case needs must be the primary factor of consideration). In fact it is an herb which can be taken for an entire lifetime, as respected herbalists such as Kerry Bone and Ed Smith will verify. I urge everyone who thinks that echinacea is a "limited use only" herb, to check out the research and benefit from the incredible immune support that it has to offer us over our lifetimes.
